Alcohol: Is It a Drug?

The BBS surveys carried out with FSW in Mozambique included young women aged 15–17. This decision is well documented and was made after careful consideration, drawing on evidence from previous research indicating that this data is crucial for devising effective policies and programs targeted at this high-risk HIV group [19, 21,22,23]. Mozambique is one of the global countries most affected by the HIV epidemic, with an HIV prevalence of 12.5% in the general adult population, according to the recent Mozambique Population-based HIV Impact Assessments (PHIA) survey [17].

This includes a 2022 study showing that in around 27,000 people, consuming up to 40 grams of alcohol (around 2.5 drinks) a day was linked to a lower risk for dementia versus abstinence in adults over age 60. A much larger study of almost 4 million people in Korea noted that mild to moderate alcohol consumption was linked to a lower risk for dementia compared to non-drinking. Similar studies were conducted by questioning drug users, resulting in a high correlation to the previous expert judgements10,11,12. The major criticism that was raised about these “panel” based approaches was the necessity of value judgements, which might depend upon subjective personal criteria and not only upon scientific facts13. Problematic may also have been the nomenclature applied in previous studies, mixing up “hazard” and “risk” into the term “drug harm”.

Healing Properties thanks the CDC, the NIH and the NIAAA for their true and due diligence. And that, in turn, helps America — and Americans — to be healthy. Yes, it sometimes seems we’re taking 10 steps back for every single step forward.

  • There’s also the potential for confounding variables, including the fact that many people like to drink alcohol to enjoy and enhance social bonds (which we know are beneficial for the brain).

  • Finally, the sensitivity analysis results from application of human toxicity data for some of the compounds (alcohol, nicotine and THC21,55,56,57) are shown in Supplementary Table S3 online and marked in Figures 1–3.

The harm score for marijuana would also likely rise after legalization, but probably not too much since pot use is already widespread. This may seem like a petty academic squabble, but it’s quite important as researchers and lawmakers try to advance more scientific approaches to drug policy. Finding the best method to evaluate the risks of drugs is much more complicated than assigning numeric rankings. Withdrawal symptoms, like pain, sleeplessness, anxiety or irritability, occur when a person who is addicted stops drinking. According to the NIH, this stage is where someone stops drinking to feel the “high” of alcohol, drinking rather to escape the “low” of the withdrawal. Drinking alcohol with medications can also cause health problems or death.1  Always check with your healthcare provider before drinking while taking prescription medicine.

That’s odd considering the numbers were almost exactly the same. It’s even odder considering binge drinking’s role in alcohol-related deaths. Apparently when it comes to alcohol vs drugs, drugs still get the benefit of no doubt.

If over 200,000 people drank themselves into the ER over eight years, what does that say about 2019’s 10,142 alcohol-impaired driving fatalities? That an over large percentage of those alcohol-fueled ER visits ended in death, that’s what. Did pills and powders truly kill more Americans last year than alcohol? The good folks at the alcohol vs drugs National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) say No and No. And when this division of the National Institutes of Health lays down its stats, people would do well to listen. In an acute sense, consumption of alcohol can lead to uninhibited behavior, sedation, lapses in judgment, and impairments in motor function.

Is Alcohol Classified As A Drug?

I was made redundant and, at 50, was finding it hard to get another job. But as I started to get into more debt and the bailiffs were knocking on the door, I needed a drink to get me through it. It was not until I was charged with drunk driving that I knew I had a problem. I’ve tried so many times – I’ve been on methadone but that was worse, especially coming off it.
